Meet Jhomerson Belchez: The Engineer with a Story as Inspiring as It Is Entertaining

Hey there! I’m Jhomerson Belchez, an Embedded Systems Engineer who graduated from Bohol Island State University with a journey that’s been equal parts challenging, rewarding, and let’s be honest—a little bit wild. From growing up without a father to building my own company, my path hasn’t been a straight line, but it’s made me who I am today. So, grab a coffee (or a snack, I won’t judge), and let me take you through the highs, lows, and laugh-out-loud moments of my life.

From Father Figure to Mischief Maker

I grew up as the eldest of two, and with no father around, I had to step up early. Picture a kid juggling school pickups, life advice, and the occasional ā€œdon’t tell momā€ moment all before I could even shave! But I didn’t let that stop me from being a kid myself. I was the type who’d dismantle the family radio just to see how it ticked (sorry, Mom). And when I wasn’t playing amateur electrician, I was dominating computer games. In fact, my crew and I won local Dota 2 championships proof that strategy, skill, and a little too much caffeine can go a long way.

Teenage Chaos Meets Academic Brilliance

Teenage years? Oh, I was a handful. Late nights, too many drinks, a cigarette or two I was basically my mom’s personal stress test. But even amidst the chaos, I had a secret weapon: math and physics. Those subjects lit me up. I’d ace equations while my friends were still figuring out how to spell ā€œalgebra.ā€ I wasn’t always the teacher’s pet, but I was definitely the one grinning ear-to-ear when the test scores came back.

College: The Ultimate Juggling Act

College hit like a freight train. Financial struggles piled up, and at one point, my mom suggested I pause my studies at Bohol Island State University. Pause? Not a chance. I’d dreamed of engineering since I was a kid, and I wasn’t about to let that slip away. So, I juggled three side jobs while tackling a full engineering course load. Yes, three. It was brutal think instant noodles and caffeine fueled all nighters but it was the turning point of my life. Those hard years shaped me, and crossing that graduation stage made every second worth it.

First Job, First Mentor

My first gig at Geckotech Inc. was a game changer. There, I met my mentor a guy so smart, I’m still half-convinced he’s a cyborg. But it wasn’t just his brain that got me, it was how he was as a father to his kids. Growing up without a dad, I’d always wondered what that kind of role model looked like and now I had one. He didn’t just teach me embedded systems, he showed me what it means to be a solid human.

The USFI Challenge: Building a Spaceship on a Budget

While at Geckotech, I started working with Upland Stock Feeds Inc. (USFI), one of our clients. Eventually, they absorbed me, and for a while, I was balancing two employers like some kind of corporate acrobat. The real test came when USFI handed me a near impossible task: automating their manufacturing process with next to no resources. It was like building a spaceship with a dollar store toolbox. Day and night, I poured everything into it and somehow, I made it work. That project wasn’t just a win, it was a badge of honor.

Loyalty Over Temptation

In January 2022, DYSON dangled a jaw-dropping offer: triple my salary. I mean, who wouldn’t pause to drool over that? But here’s the thing I was the only embedded developer at USFI, and I’d started something I couldn’t abandon. After some serious soul searching (and maybe staring at the offer letter for five minutes), I turned Dyson down. USFI’s counteroffer wasn’t as flashy, but finishing what I’d started mattered more. Loyalty’s my thing.

From Engineer to Freelance Consultant

This year, after training a new wave of engineers at USFI, I’ve taken on new challenges to grow my expertise. I occasionally freelance for international clients, diving into exciting embedded systems projects that keep my skills sharp. Alongside this, I provide consultancy for a local manufacturing plant, helping optimize their processes with the same passion I brought to USFI. It’s a dynamic mix of projects that keeps me on my toes, and I thrive in the challenge of delivering innovative solutions.
